Overview
Tulip is a strategic card game inspired by the famous 17th-century tulip market bubble. Players take on the role of merchants seeking to maximize their profits by buying and selling tulips while anticipating market fluctuations.
Each player has a garden where they place Tulip, Black Tulip, or Action cards. On their turn, they must play one card and draw a new one to maintain a hand of four cards. Tulip cards cause the market value to shift, Black Tulips provide a fixed income, and Action cards influence the game by changing tulip values or interacting with opponents.
The game ends when a fourth market crash occurs, a fourth Black Tulip is played, or the draw pile is depleted.
Before Game Start
In 2/3/4/5/6 players game, each player gets 3/2/1/1/1 tulip(s) card in their garden.
In the market, the starting price of tulips already in play is 5 while the others are 0.
On your turn
You must play a card from your hand into your garden. Then draw to complete your hand of 4 cards.
If you played...
- a Tulip card: The corresponding market cursor card down one notch. This will generate pts equivalent to its value at the end of the game.
- a Black-Tulip card: Nothing happens. This will be worth 3pts at the end of the game.
- an Action card: Achieves the effect if possible. This will be worth 1pt at the end of the game.
Action Cards
- Exchange: Exchange a face-up tulip card in one player’s garden for another player’s tulip card.
- Variation: Increase or decrease the value of a «cursor» card by one notch (only be applied if at least one tulip of this color is present among the players). A tulip with a value of «5» can only go down.
- Draw: draw a card at random from an opponent’s hand. Play it immediately in front of you and activate its effect. A player with 1 card in his or her hand cannot be the target of this action.
Crash
If the value of a «cursor» card reaches «0», a CRASH is triggered. All «tulip» cards of this colour in the gardens are removed from the game.
End of the Game
The game ends as soon as at least 1 situations occur:
- When a 4th crash is triggered.
- When a 4th black tulip is drawn.
- When the last card of the deck is drawn.
In these 2 cases, the player who triggers the end of the game does not draw a card.
Reveal all your hands and place them into your garden without influencing the market value or carry out any of the game actions. Each player then calculates the points won.
