Ahoy! Sharpen your wits, steady your nerves, and get ready to bluff, bid, and battle on the high seas, because Skull King, the swashbuckling trick-taking classic, has just arrived on Board Game Arena!
If you enjoy games like Oh Hell!, Wizard, Euchre, or Spades, you will feel right at home. But Skull King is not just another trick-taker, it is a tense, tactical duel of risk and timing where predicting your own success is just as important as outplaying your rivals.
Each round begins with players secretly and simultaneously declaring how many tricks they think they will win. Will you boldly promise victory, or cautiously aim for none at all?
Once bids are revealed, the real challenge begins: you must win exactly what you promised. Too many tricks? You are punished. Too few? Same fate. Suddenly, losing a trick can be just as thrilling as capturing one!
This simultaneous bidding keeps the table on edge (some rounds are overbid, others underbid, and every hand carries the promise of wild swings in fortune).
The game’s 66-card deck is far from ordinary:
- Four suits (1–13) for classic trick-taking play.
- Pirates, the Tigress, and the dreaded Skull King, each bringing special powers that can upend the strongest hand.
- Mermaids, who can tame the Skull King himself.
- Escape cards, letting you bow out of danger.
Black Jolly Roger cards trump all numbered suits, Pirates trump Mermaids, and the Skull King trumps everything (except when a clever Mermaid takes him down. Add in the versatile Tigress and the unpredictability of simultaneous bidding, and no two games ever feel the same).
Nail your bid and score 20 points per trick.
Miss it, and lose 10 points per trick you are off.
Bid zero successfully, and earn a jackpot of 10 × the round number points — but fail, and you will sink just as quickly.
Bonus points are awarded for daring feats like capturing Pirates with the Skull King, or the King with a Mermaid.
After ten rounds of rising tension and escalating stakes, the pirate with the most points claims ultimate glory.
