Forgetting to select a pilot action in phase 3 can have a huge impact on the game, in particular when it prevents you from shipping to Ruhrort. However, there's visual reminder until phase 4, when it's too late to change your action.
It would be good if there was a confirmation step or preview in phase 3 before the final confirmation that shows explicitly whether you'll be able to ship to Ruhrort (and elsewhere) or just a single location. This would also be helpful when not picking Pilot since it confirms you're going to ship to where you think.

The easiest way to prevent this is to always take the pilot if available and no other action is needed.

On the board game, the starting arrows on the river give some information, according to its colors :
- orange : without pilot, the coal die is delivered to the next downstream city
- grey : without pilot, the coal die is delivered to the next downstream industry
- black : you cannot deliver the coal die from this location without pilot
- orange : without pilot, the coal die is delivered to the next downstream city
- grey : without pilot, the coal die is delivered to the next downstream industry
