On the game detail page (example: boardgamearena.com/gamepanel?game=kingsguild), there is no button to start playing the game! This is incredibly annoying.
Adding a game to favorites doesn't make sense for a new game I've never played. I want to play it first before adding. Further, if the game is already in my favorites the primary action shouldn't be to unfavorite. Of course the primary action for a favorite game should be to play it!
I have had the same problem, I think. Did you try to set the third option to AUTOMATIC (automatic choice of opponents) under "PLAY NOW" menu? When you set it to manual it also helps.
Right now, when someone suggests an interesting game I should learn, I look it up and click the graduation cap ("Learn how to play..."). After looking at the rules from the game page I have to go back to play now and then search for the game again! This should be a straightforward one-click action from the game page.
(The OP in a different suggestion suggests clicking the "add to favorites" button to shorten this, but why would I do that? It's not one of my favourites yet; I haven't even played it yet! And even if this is the intended pathway, that's not *obvious* to someone on the game page who just wants to play the game—nothing about the "add to favorites" button suggests "psst, if you want to play, you should click this button".)

This is essentially the same request as #16311 (which was posted later) and #16173 (which was marked as a bug rather than a suggestion, hence resolved as "notabug").
Well I really do consider this as a bug too. :-) It's a huge oversight to miss the "play" button on the game's page.
BGA team, you must at least give a big "play now" button on this page (if you don't want to give a "create table" button because you're trying to encourage the automatic or arena mode instead of manual mode).

I made this suggestion earlier in the suggestions area, now I have been led here. Games should have a "Play Now" button.
Yeah, this is a bizarre UI choice that to play a game I'm looking at I now have to go through a maze of other places on the website rather than being able to make a table from the page. 'Add to favourites' should be replaced by 'Play now'.
I often end up on the "game" play and spend a few seconds looking for the "play now" button, only to remember it doesn't exist and I have to go the long route of -> "play game" -> "find game" -> "open table section".
I disagree. There should only be one spot to start a game, so that maybe they can control people automatically joining games without being notified, and they losing due to abandoning the game. When there is only one page to start a game, it would be much easier for the designers to control and notify players when an automatic game starts.
I selected several games to play in "Arena Mode". The games are not very popular games, so it tends to take quite a few minutes, or even hours, before the games begin. While I was waiting for my "Arena Mode" games to begin, I received a notice that I had a turn based game that was available. When leaving the "Play Now" page with automatic real time games pending, you are normally prompted that the games will be cancelled. However, when you leave the page to play in a "Turn Based" game there is no prompt, and the pending games are not cancelled.
Now, it is also not normally a problem to make a move on a "Turn Based" game and to go back to the start page, but in this instance, the person whom I was playing was online, and we began to play the game in real time. The next problem that occurred is that there is no prompt that an automatic "Real Time" game, whether "Arena Mode" or not, has started when you are currently playing another "Turn Based" game. If it is a "Simple Mode" game, then the game just won't start. However, if it is an "Arena Mode" game, it starts automatically, you are removed from the game, and receive penalties for abandoning the game.
I am including a screenshot of the notice that I received of my loss in Battle Sheep as soon as I finished my game of Nine Men's Morris.
imgur.com/a/rlUF4xm
There was no way for me to know that the game began, until I had already lost.
One of the primary goals of "Arena Mode" play is to foster an environment where people play games more freely. I assume that is the reason that players are not allowed to leave "Arena Mode" games. To prevent players from being able to screen their opponents.
There is, however, an alternative. If the names of players were not displayed until the game actually begins, then players would not be able to screen their opponents. This would allow the standard "Real-Time" game features to be implemented in "Arena Mode."
Currently for "Real-Time" games, if a player does not start the game, there is no penalty, because the game does not start. The same could be done in "Arena Mode." If a player does not choose to start their game within a short time period, they could be replaced with the next available player. If there are no other available players, then the table could just wait for the player to return.
Now, the other players also should not be penalized, if this turns out to be an extended period of time, so all players should be prompted to start the game again, if it takes more than a minute for the game to begin.
That is how I feel the problem should be resolved, but in the mean time, if you allow a player to go to a "Turn Based" game from the "Play Now" page with pending "Real Time" games, you would either prompt to cancel the games, or open the "Turn Based" game in a new tab.
FYI:
There is also a bug report that suggest not penalizing players who do not start a game. Fixing this bug could resolve this issue.

Not sure why the previous functionality was removed by the developers (i.e. having the 'create table' / 'play now' button on the game description page) ... was there a specific reason for this change? Was it part of separating the lobby server from the other servers for the site (i.e the load management changes)?
Anyway, I agree that having to add a game to your favorites just to play it, from the description page seems a bit odd (because maybe it's not a favorite game), especially because it didn't always used to be like this.

It really would improve UI if there was a button on the game information page that passed through to the lobby as if a click event on the relevant game were made manually...
After having looked up a game that looks fun you currently either have to go:
"Play Now" -> "(scroll to) 'Find a game'" -> "type its name" -> "Play Now!"
OR
"Add to Favourites" -> "Play Now" -> "(scroll to find it in) Favourites" -> "Play Now!"
Neither are good UI.
Surely it wouldn't take that much effort to put a link to the lobby page with a query variable attached (e.g. /lobby?game=loveletter or whatever ID is most convenient) and then in a tiny piece of JavaScript detect if the variable "game" is found and just follow the identical process that would be initiated if the "Play Now!" button were manually pressed from the lobby system directly...

After being annoyed by this a lot I took a quick look at the code and the button is still there, just hidden, and works exactly as I proposed it should... It can be re-enabled using a tiny bit of custom CSS code:
#gamepanel-module #create_new_table {
display: block !important;
}
Or if you would like to be a Guinea pig for a lot of my CSS tinkering... github.com/paul-norman/bga-css (can't promise that everything will work, just improving as I find issues).

I'll just second everything everyone else has already said.
Except for Rodney, not because he disagrees with us, but because he went off on other problems that should be in another report and have nothing to do with this issue.
And Paul, thanks for the info - but everyone doesn't know what to do with what you're doing. (And we shouldn't have to fix their code.)

Yes, I agree with this suggestion. Whenever I want to play a game. I have to go to two places, one to look at the game, and then another to start the game. Why can't we just start the game when I'm looking at it. It doesn't make any sense! It's extremely frustrating!

The news articles also keep saying things like "Why not try the game now? Click here!" and linking to a page where - without this button - you can't directly play the game.

Agreed, forcing me to favorite a game, then go back to the play game page, find it in the list, THEN create the table to start playing is an asinine way of doing things. BGA should be encouraging people to actually PLAY games. If someone is on the page learning how to play a game, the next thing they should see is a big button that says "PLAY GAME". This is a major UI failure for whomever designed it. Not only that, but it is a major hurdle for new players to BGA to overcome. It is very unintuitive.
yes, this has been maddening me ever since they changed this. Rodney there is no reason why they can't still 'control' who is in a game. with all the buttons. most UI knows its better to have multiple ways to do something instead of one. I just want to look at the game and then hit "play" without all the extra steps, when this is literately what the site is for.

I was linked to a game page and wanted to play it and it was a lot of work to go back to "Play Now" and find the game to play.
A direct link from the "Game Detail" page to the "Play now" page with that game expanded would be awesome!
