This is quite a bad tie-breaker indeed. that time is also mostly your (one but) last turns time, not the whole game.

In boardgamearena.com/table?table=143162413 I actually used 30 seconds less than the opponent for the whole game, but lost because I used 3 more seconds in the last turn.

Agreed this tie-breaker is absolutely terrible. Either a tie should be rules a tie, or a better tiebreaker tied to gameplay should be implemented, such as who played first loses, or last wins, or maybe based on number of tiles played, etc.

UK v Taiwan based players. Large 7 x7 board.
Absolutely epic game over a number of days. Thinking time was obviously dependant on when each person was online, and affected by time zones.
The result was 31 points each tie, with winner the decided 259125 v 259017.
I suggest that this tie break is a poor solution at any time, but for a turn based game is an absolutely ridiculous solution. If one person always takes their next turn within 2-3 hours, and the other 12+, there can only be one winner.
This is my last game of United Square on turn based!!!!

Most of the time, this is indeed a terrible rule. In a turn based round robin tournament e.g., this penalties people with sleeping times a bit before their opponent or people who are less online. There is no need for a tie in a round robin, or in arena mode. In fact, often people misses trophees (top 3 tournament places) because of this tie breaker. In this way, it does not award the best players but those who are the most online. I would like to see no tie breaker or at least to be configurable as an option.

I propose a more equitable tiebreaker: award victory to the player who places the last square. This tiebreaker is fair and logical, as it eliminates any reliance on players' online availability. As players recognize the game's progression towards a tie, the focus shifts to securing the opportunity to make the final move. Furthermore, this tiebreaker makes sense from a strategic standpoint: when both players vie for the last turn, the player with the most strategically positioned squares remaining in hand will have the best chance of winning.

(continued) The proposed tiebreaker also aligns naturally with United Square. Throughout the game, areas on the board are created where it is disadvantageous to begin placing squares. Consequently, players aim to place the last square in an area, forcing the opponent to start another. It seems natural to continue this gameplay approach for the final area in case of a tie. The player who manages to place the last square in the final area wins the tie.
