This player had ~700 elo so was definitely not a first timer.
After we abandoned our game with this player, I was then able to red thumb successfully.

Given two players, both Master ranks, where P1 is one you've played with before and P2 is your first time playing with, and you want to RT them after several rounds, you can RT P1 mid-game, but P2 gets the above error in question. After finishing the game (or abandoning), the game is registered as "not first time with them" and then you can RT them.

It would be good to have a different, clearer wording in the error alert if this is intentional, although I think in the first place you should be able to RT a person who's obviously, beyond doubt, being a troll. Poor plays aside (everyone has bad days) there are times when the first time you play with a person and it's not just a "beginner's mistake".
