I was playing as yellow (set up as my preferred color) and I had a really hard time fining my pans on the field. They did not stand out much against the background. The red outline at times made it even more difficult to see them.

Highly agree. Yellow is a terrible colour to use. Player pieces become lost on the tiles. An alternative approach could be to increase the background contrast on the tiles or a bolder black outline around the player pieces.
