You can place either side of the cards in your hand. However, you can only view the back side of those cards when you are placing them. It would be nice if you could view the cards during opponent's turns, to speed up planning for your turn. It would be even nicer, and I would argue even essential, to be able to view the flip side of the cards in your hand when you're deciding what card to take next from the supply.
