On a previous game, when the end of round victory check was performed, I was able to tap illusion and pay 2 in order to gain 2 points from the bestiary.
In this game, I was not given that option.

I read the Tom Lehmann rules clarification for illusion, but I am still confused. I don't understand why this worked on a previous game but not this one.

To use illusion, you'll have to react to another card power. End of turn is a normal sequence not initiated by a card and so can't trigger an illusion's reaction alone.
