It says that when you play a card "If it matches suits with two cards on the field, choose one of those two to capture with your card."
However, I played a card from December whilst two December cards were on the table and it defaulted to capturing only one of them.

You can select cards manually if you want to (as player preference), or the game asks it when you have to choose between a higher scoring card and a card with lower score but a part of Yaku.
It is explicitly stated that Rain bird is not a part of combination on the tooltip, Yaku table, and table option description. A common mistake.
