This feature use to be on "Asobrain" which was similar to Catan.
As the game continued you would see how many times a dice was rolled.
I agree this is nice to have during the game to see how many times certain dice were rolled.
I've only played two games, but in both games felt the 10 and 8 were unfairly under rolled.

Yes the real time display is helpful when you try to negotiate with players and say things like "I only ever got 1 wheat from that spot, please don't block it". It's helpful to make sure you're being accurate based on the history of dice that was rolled (And since it's in the game log, it's not new information, just collecting it into a popup or tooltip somewhere)

I can confirm the camillemayer suggestion. On BSW, a panel contained an histogram automatically refreshed after each dice throw. It was just as information, but it avoid a lot of non fact-based messages in the chat. For me, display it during the game is really a simple implementation and can make the ambiance better during the game

As a turn-base game player, i agree with the suggestion ! To get an idea of what ressources are available for trade or theft, I have to scroll a long time through the game log. A real time dice throw stats display would be a great improvement for me.

the old playcatan website of circa 2010 used to have this "number of dice rolls" histogram. It was off by default but users could click a button to display it if they wanted to. It was useful to see what the distribution was when you couldn't understand why you were doing so badly, to see that 3 and 11 had come up loads and your 5-6-9 combo hadn't happened much (at that point) and then later you could see the distribution change. Or sometimes not change and you could just chalk it down to weird dice that game. It's not essential but it is useful. Particularly when you get a whiner in the chat who thinks the game is persecuting them etc.

As a mathematician with a graduate degree, I agree that the random number generator for Catan needs to be looked at. The last game I played had 8 and 9 rolled twice as much as they would have been in a normal distribution and 5 rolled half as much, but more notably the die clearly favored one player and punished one player. I've noticed this now on many games. It's really not fun to play with a die that is so obviously not random.

re my post above, the histogram was real time (in game) not limited to end game stats. There were also useful summary tallies of how many resources each player had received/traded/had blocked/had robbed/received by robbery available in real time too. It was far more useful in-game and easier to read than the end game table presented on BGA.

Playing a lot, and it seams the algorithm has 'habits". I just had a game where a player threw 7 times 7 in consecutive turns, games with hardly 6 or 8, but an amazing amount of 5 and 9. Even games where there were more 2 and 12 than 4 or 10. Distribution is weird, to say the least.

I can only echo that the dice do not follow the probabilities at all. The distribution of rolls is not anywhere near how it should be. Please look into it. It is very frustrating for many players. I can't chalk ot up to a fluke, as many games as I have played now.

I've been accumulating dice totals across multiple games, to see if there is sufficient regression toward the mean.
That being said, the dice totals are incorrect at the end of a game. For example:

There were 58 player turns, but the dice rolls add up to 101. If you're already showing %age for each roll, why are the actual counts scaled up to ~100? I've seen this for multiple games: the total number of turns will be 50-60 but the number of rolls is ~100.

I definitely agree that the dice do not follow expected probabilities. In my experience this has worsened to the point that the winner of most games of experienced players is (in effect) the dice, not the "winning" player.
Although I try to counter this reality by placing my initial settlements close to as many different numbers as possible, almost invariably the dice decide to fixate on the numbers to which I am not adjacent (i.e. 5s and 9s - or worse - when I am near both 6s and 8s.)
Although I really like the game concept, this flaw has led me to quit one or two games in extreme frustration and consider giving up playing the game entirely.

Je ne vais pas parler des probabilité générale mais dans des cas spéciaux ou les probabilité semble être modifiées : 1) lorsque le voleur est sur un numéro, celui-ci sort beaucoup plus souvent juste après. 2) Lorsque j'ai plus de 7 cartes à mon tour, la probabilité que le 7 sorte passe de 16.67% à 50%. 3) lorsqu'une colonie est construite, trés souvent le numéro qui sort juste après est situé sur une case adjacente à la nouvelle colonie.
Je ne suis pas le seul à l'avoir remarqué?!

I don't know if this topic has been covered before? I'm not going to talk about the general probability but in special cases where the probability seems to be modified: 1) when the thief is on a number, it comes out much more often just after. 2) When I have more than 7 cards in my turn, the probability that the 7 comes out goes from 16.67% to 50%. 3) when a colony is built, very often the number that comes out right after is located on a square adjacent to the new colony.
I'm not the only one who noticed this?!

#1 for sure (if I want my 10 to be rolled, I put the robber on the other 10 - it doesn't guarantee it, but seems to increase the probability)
#2 I have found this to be true as well, but usually it does not happen to the player with the lowest elo at the table (or perhaps, not to the current loser).
#3 I haven't noticed this, but I will keep an eye out for it
My observations
#4 The dice rolls, especially in the first half of the game, in the first half of the game often benefit one player, based on their initial settlements. This person who benefits also tends to roll more 7's (but not when their hand is over limit)

I agree with lordax: this suggestion does not add anything to the game.
Additionally, it will make the game experience poorer, encouraging people with a poor sense of statistics to complain about the random number generator to be buggy when it is not.
A game of Catan typically involves between 60 and 90 die rolls. Those are not Large Numbers. That is too little to make it very likely that the distribution of results will always look like a normal distribution. There is nothing weird about a game of Catan where 3 is rolled more often than 8 --- also on a physical table, with real dice. (If you aggregated all the roll dice from all the games, then you would clearly see 8 being rolled more often, but in any particular game anything can happen.)
And yet, this thread is full of posts complaining that for this or that specific game, the distribution does not look normal and/or the random number generator is buggy. 🤦 A live count of results would only encourage this behaviour ("We have rolled 12 times and 8 has not come up yet!").
If I could vote against this suggestion, I would.

I agree that it can be frustrating not getting the normal dice rolls in some games. But of course, the more times you play the more times the statistics should get real.
To be honest i was not happy when i lost some games and i had the best numbers to win. But that is what probability is, it won't always be accurate, just most of times.
In order to know if the number generator is wrong, we need to take into account every game that is played. That would be millions of dice rolls and then check the percentage of every number.
But only with let's say around 100 times per game, i think it is not enough to assure that there is any issue.

Catan is Random, dice are random; Randomness is the very thing preventing rolls to be predictable.
That's it, there's no more to it, no premium advantage bullshit or dark plots against you.

While it's not normal in regards to pure probability, it still fits in with the randomness of dice. Your single game is not at all a large enough sample set to say that the randomizer is wrong.

Very happy to see Cities and Knights expansion included! I find Cities and Knights to be a little less dependent on dice rolls to win than other variants. But this game had double as many 10's as 8's, giving a huge advantage to the two players with the lowest elo's.

Cities and Knights has a card called Inventor that allows you to switch 2 numbers on the board (not 2, 6, 8, 12). In real life, I always get myself a 5 or a 9 and give away a 3 or 11. With these weird dice, I see players doing the opposite.

Humans are terrible at random and even programing random is hard. I have been in IT for 30 years and places like The Cloudflare use lava lamps for Random Encryption generation. So it is not really the fault of the Game Site or the Developers. Just much harder to do than most people realize.

The dice statistics are highly improbable; each game gets stuck on a number that comes up way more frequently than a 6 or an 8. How long will it take you to fix this issue? You've ruined the game! Strategy has become pointless since the game arbitrarily gets stuck in one direction, leaving no chance to recover in a match. You have thousands of complaints and yet you ask for money. Please review alogirthm for your game. In this particular case, the player easily dominated by having 8's and 9's. After playing many games and not claiming to be the best, I have never seen the dice be in such favor of one player. I almost feel as if some players may have figured out how to adjust rolls.

I think there is an issue with the random number generator, I just played a game (
boardgamearena.com/4/catan?table=542823321) where there was not a single 9. 63 rolls, a 9 should have an 11.11% chance of rolling. The odds of rolling 63 times and never getting a 9 is less than one in 1669. Now realizing that I have played nearly that many games, there are still a lot of games were numbers don't roll anywhere near what they should based on probability. I think there must be something odd about how the RNG is rounded somehow that leads to some numbers coming up too much or not enough. I think it might be rounding because it different game to game, or maybe there are just patterns in the RNG so that it is not very good to begin with.

100% catan dice is not random. I have played many times, in the version for free. Whenever I have more than 7 cards in catan basic, the dice shows 7 most of the time for me or for any of the players. I understand it is because I am playing the game for free, and the dice favors the people that are paying for the game in the website. However, it does not exaclty resemble a real game.

the data statistics are very bad, it seems that the site decides which numbers will be the best in that game. There is no way i'm in my third game in a row (with 5-6-8-9 production) and loosing awfully to someone with double 10 or double 4 or double 3/11, check your dice statistics! The same number is rolled over and over and over again yet you do not fix this bug. In this game the 9 and 11 were rolled every round to the benefit of 1 player in particular and eventually to the 2 players, I sat for 4 rounds without a 5, 8, 10, 4 and this happened several times where you sit with numbers that should roll while they roll 9, 11, 12 numbers that should not roll, till there was no hope. This happens frequently in this game yet when you lose they take 12 to 15 points when you had no control or strategy that will work. I see this complaint multiple times yet you do not fix this bug. 1 player is normally always benefited from the constant roll of 1 number. In the case of this game it was 9 and secondly 11, definitely against all odds. I have seen it do this with 3's, and this time it rolled 12 three times to the benefit of the same player. I quit playing this game for that reason and have tried to find a better place to play this game on line. I enjoy the game and keep coming back but the frustration drives me away time and again.

This dice statistic is just math near imposible. I had my strategy around 6 and 10. They BOTH happens almost same number of times as 2 (!!!!!) Its just insanly bad feeling to play this game just pass every turn cause u cant even trade or stuff. And u didnt choose bad strategy - its just dice is broken.

Was playing catan today and the dice statistics are way off what they should be it really skewed who was able to win. There was probably 5x as many 4s being rolled as 6s, and at one point 7 was rolled 3 times in a row. How are you supposed to play a fair game like this?
