dettonator11Welcome to *Medina*! In this game, you and 1 to 3 other players will be rebuilding the walled city of Medina together...while trying to claim the biggest palaces and most prestigious locations for yourself! If you grab too early, though, you may be forced to add to your rivals' palaces down the line!1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
dettonator11This is the main board. Medina is currently empty except for a [blue]well[/blue] and a [green]merchant[/green] which are placed randomly at the start of the game. There is also a *tower* in each corner.2medina-board000medina-grid-place-12-8 3 medina-piece-6-3 2
dettonator11These are your pieces. You *must* play two of them in Medina each turn. (The first and second players only place a single piece on their first turn. In a two player game, the first player places a piece, and players place two pieces from then on.)3medina-my-pieces000
dettonator11I'll explain the pieces as we go. For now, you need to take your first turn. Place a white building on [red]this empty space[/red] next to the [green]merchant[/green].4medina-grid-place-11-8010medina-piece-player-pieces-83980425-building-white 17 medina-grid-place-11-8 1
dettonator11Now it's your turn again, and the players have established four *palaces* on the board. A *palace* is one or more connected buildings that are all the same color. There are two very important rules about *palaces*:1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment676cfe8b1613700
dettonator111. A *palace* can never touch another *palace* of any color, even diagonally. 2. When you place a building, you must expand an incomplete *palace* of its color (if there is one).2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment676cfe8b1613700
dettonator11Click on the white building in your supply again. Notice how only spaces adjacent to the white *palace* on the board are highlighted as legal placements. Then place it [red]to the left[/red] of the white building that is already there.3medina-grid-place-10-8676cfe8b1613710medina-piece-player-pieces-83980425-building-white 16 medina-grid-place-10-8 1
dettonator11There is another important thing to understand about *palaces*. Just because you place a building does not mean you "own" that *palace*. Therefore, you can expand any *palace*, even one that other players have placed. Do that now by placing a brown building [red]below[/red] the brown palace already on the board.1medina-grid-place-4-8676d8ac87da7210medina-piece-player-pieces-83980425-building-brown 16 medina-grid-place-4-8 1
dettonator11Blue has placed one of their [green]merchants[/green], so let's look at how they work. [green]Merchants[/green] must be placed next (orthogonally adjacent) to another merchant on the board. They can be placed adjacent to any *palaces*, but they don't have to be (as in this case).1medina-grid-place-13-8676e23abe868900
dettonator11[green]Merchants[/green] must also form a single-file line, and players can only add [green]merchants[/green] to either end of that line. The line cannot touch itself - that is, a [green]merchant[/green] must never be orthogonally adjacent to more than two [green]merchants[/green].2medina-grid-place-13-8676e23abe868900
dettonator11Blue has also built the first wall of the game. Walls must be placed on the spaces for them around the edge of the city. They must be built either next to a tower or next to a wall piece that's been placed previously. Finally, two towers cannot be connected by walls - there must be a gap of at least one unbuilt space on every edge of the city at the end of the game.1medina-grid-place-17-1676e23b32155700
dettonator11Both [green]merchants[/green] and walls are worth one point to any player who owns a palace touching them - we'll see how that works soon.2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment676e23b32155700
dettonator11Green has placed his *rooftop* on the white *palace* that we started! This white *palace* now belongs to Green, and they will not be able to claim another white *palace* this game.1medina-grid-place-11-8676e4742d8c2000
dettonator11Green was awarded 4 points for completing the white *palace* - 1 for each building comprising the *palace* and 1 for the [green]merchant[/green] next to the palace. Green also claimed the "Largest White Palace" tile, which is worth 1 point. If someone else claims a white *palace* that is at least one building bigger than Green's later in the game, they will take that tile away from Green.2medina-palace-tiles676e4742d8c2000
dettonator11Notice that each color of *palace* tile is worth a different number of points. If you end up with the largest orange *palace*, that is worth 4 points!3medina-palace-tiles676e4742d8c2000
dettonator11It's your turn again. First, expand the purple *palace*...1medina-grid-place-12-4676e52343d97e10medina-piece-player-pieces-83980425-building-purple 16 medina-grid-place-12-4 1
dettonator11...and then place a white building on [red]this[/red] space. Now that Green has completed the first white *palace*, no one can add any more white buildings to it (not even Green). By placing a white building, you get to decide where the next white palace is going to go - and now Green cannot claim it!1medina-grid-place-16-1676e523b52fa010medina-piece-player-pieces-83980425-building-white 16 medina-grid-place-16-1 1
dettonator11Wait, WHAT? Didn't I just say that Green couldn't add to their white *palace* anymore?1medina-grid-place-11-7676e65283eda500
dettonator11Well, I did say that no more buildings could be added...but Green has just placed a stable. You can think of a stable as a wild building - it can be added to any color of *palace*, even after that *palace* has been completed.2medina-piece-player-pieces-83980425-stable676e65283eda500
dettonator11The *palace* must still not be adjacent (even diagonally!) to another *palace* after placing the stable, and stables must be placed next to at least one building piece. That is, you can't place a stable that's only touching another stable. You also can't place stables on their own - they must expand a *palace*.3medina-piece-player-pieces-83980425-stable676e65283eda500
dettonator11Also notice that Green gained two more points - one for the stable (which means his white *palace* has become size four), and one for the [green]merchant[/green] next to that stable (and therefore, the *palace*). The more pieces are in or adjacent to a *palace*, the more points it's worth!4icon_point_84000586676e65283eda500
dettonator11On Blue's last turn, they expanded the new white *palace* with two buildings. That means you can use your first piece to expand it again, and stake your first claim using a rooftop as your second placement. Do that now...1medina-grid-place-16-4676e652e2ceef10medina-piece-player-pieces-83980425-building-white 16 medina-grid-place-16-4 1
dettonator11It doesn't usually matter where on a *palace* you place the roof (since it's all connected anyway), but make sure to replicate the replay by placing it on the [red]second building from the top[/red] in this case.1medina-grid-place-16-2676ec2532ba8c10medina-piece-player-pieces-83980425-rooftop-red 16 medina-grid-place-16-2 1
dettonator11Hey, look! When we claimed that white *palace*, we also claimed a tower tile! Like *palace* tiles, tower tiles are also worth the number of points that they show. You claim them by being the most recent player to have one of your claimed palaces be connected to that tower by a wall.1medina-piece-player-score-83980425-watcher-3676ec26858dfb00
dettonator11Three of the four tower tiles also give extra [green]merchants[/green] to the first player to claim them. The fewer points the tower is worth, the more [green]merchants[/green] you get, with the 4 tower granting no additional [green]merchants[/green]. The 3 tower tile we just picked up gave us 1 [green]merchant[/green].2medina-piece-watcher-tiles1-merchant676ec26858dfb00
dettonator11Blue has started a new white *palace* now that you've claimed yours. Those [green]merchants[/green] next to it will make it more valuable for whoever claims it, and Blue is the only player who hasn't claimed a white *palace* yet.1medina-grid-place-13-7676ec3b58050200
dettonator11Let's look at the [blue]well[/blue] now, since Green has placed an orange building near it. The [blue]well[/blue] is the gathering place for all the inhabitants of Medina, so no buildings can be placed in any of the 8 spaces around it (though [green]merchants[/green] can be).1medina-piece-6-3676ec5af6233c00
dettonator11Furthermore, any *palaces* that occupy the four marked spaces in straight lines away from the [blue]well[/blue] are worth a bonus 4 points to their owners! Which explains what's about to happen...2medina-grid-place-8-3676ec5af6233c00medina-grid-place-4-3 2 medina-grid-place-6-1 2 medina-grid-place-6-5 2 medina-grid-place-8-3 2
dettonator11Green has claimed this tiny orange *palace*! While it might not seem wise to claim such a small *palace*, we know that it's worth the extra 4 points from the [blue]well[/blue]. Furthermore, Green might be able to hold on to the 4 point *palace* tile as well, if they use a few stables at the right times.1medina-grid-place-8-3676ec5bd2d98d00
dettonator11Let's skip ahead a little bit...1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment676ec5c482df400
dettonator11Let's look at the last piece we haven't covered yet. It would be a shame to let Blue take this large white *palace* just because you and Green have already claimed yours. Fortunately, we have a way to deny Blue this bounty.1medina-grid-place-14-7676f991cd605400
dettonator11Play your last white building [red]here[/red]...2medina-grid-place-14-6676f991cd605410medina-piece-player-pieces-83980425-building-white 16 medina-grid-place-14-6 1
dettonator11Then place your grey neutral roof [red]on top[/red]!1medina-grid-place-14-667703f993c0b710medina-piece-player-pieces-83980425-rooftop-neutral 16 medina-grid-place-14-6 1
dettonator11In a two player game, each player has two "neutral roof" pieces. In a three player game, each player has one. With four players, no neutral roofs are used. *Palaces* can be claimed using a neutral roof even if you've already claimed a *palace* of that color, to prevent another player from claiming that *palace*.1medina-grid-place-14-667703f9dca0a900
dettonator11Any tiles that would be claimed by a neutral *palace* return to the supply, as the "Largest White *Palace*" tile did here. If a neutral *palace* claims any additional pieces, such as additional [green]merchants[/green] from a tower, those pieces are removed from the game.2medina-piece-palace-tiles-palace-white67703f9dca0a900
dettonator11Just a few more things left. Let's skip ahead again...3medina-my-pieces67703f9dca0a900
dettonator11This last type of piece is called a "tea tile". Players do not start with any tea tiles - instead, the first player to claim a purple *palace* claims 3 tea tiles from the supply as well. The next purple *palace* claims 2 tea tiles, and the third claims a single tea tile. (If a purple *palace* is given a neutral roof, the corresponding tiles are removed from the supply.)1medina-piece-tea-tiles-tea67718c15f250900
dettonator11Claim this purple *palace* now to gain some tea tiles.2medina-grid-place-12-467718c15f250910medina-piece-player-pieces-83980425-rooftop-red 16 medina-grid-place-12-4 1
dettonator11Recall that you are required to play two pieces every turn. Sometimes, especially toward the end of the game, you want to wait for the other players to take turns before you do too much (especially if they will have to add buildings to a *palace* you can claim).1medina-piece-player-pieces-83980425-tea67718c2d6ac0500medina-piece-player-pieces-83980425-tea 1
dettonator11Use a tea tile to take a tea break! You can spend a single tea tile on any turn instead of placing a piece. You still have to place the other required piece somewhere on the board - two tea breaks in one turn is too much!2medina-piece-player-pieces-83980425-tea67718c2d6ac0500medina-piece-player-pieces-83980425-tea 1
dettonator11A few last things. This area shows the total pieces remaining in all players' personal supplies combined (including your own). It can be useful to check how many pieces the other players are holding, especially if you can wait for them to build your *palaces* for you!3medina-remaining-pieces-wrapper67718c2d6ac0500
dettonator11When every player has claimed a *palace* of a certain color, any buildings of that color that any player has left in their supply are discarded. Also, in the rare but possible case that an unclaimed *palace* cannot legally be expanded, players are permitted to begin building a new *palace* of the same color elsewhere on the board.4archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment67718c2d6ac0500
dettonator11Once a player has placed all of their pieces, they will not take turns any more. Once every player has placed all their pieces, the game is over, and the player with the most points wins!5archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment67718c2d6ac0500
dettonator11We've gone over everything you'll need to rebuild *Medina*! Thank you for playing through this tutorial. Have fun!6archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment67718c2d6ac0500
