Nekonyancer[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img67d07356be0b29.92987017.jpg[/img] In June of 1941, Germany, along with Finland, Romania, and the other Axis nations, invaded the Soviet Union, seeking another lightning-fast victory. Four years and millions of lives later, Soviet troops captured Berlin and forced the German surrender. [green][tip] This tutorial is best viewed on a computer![/green]1maintitlebar_content000QGEFroundTrack 1
Nekonyancer*Quartermaster General: East Front* portrays the struggle between Germany and the Soviet Union. This 2-player game is played over 16 seasonal game rounds from *Summer 1941* through *Spring 1945.* You can use the [blue]*timeline*[/blue] along the right side of the map to keep track.2maintitlebar_content000QGEFroundTrack 2
NekonyancerPlayers score points by holding key *geographical objectives* during scoring rounds. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img67d0735a4fa2d5.69041551.jpg[/img] The first player to get *10* points ahead of the other immediately wins. Otherwise, whoever has the most points after the final scoring round wins!3maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerYour screen is probably a bit messy right now. There are cards everywhere! Let's set the *Contingency* cards aside for now. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img67d0735b67a829.08832130.jpg[/img][img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img67d0735c658d24.38424542.jpg[/img] *Click on the arrowed buttons at the top-left and top-right of your screen. Then continue.*4pagemaintitletext000
NekonyancerNow we have a better view of the map! In this tutorial, we'll play as *Germany* and the *Pact* - two distinct factions operated by a single player. The Germany/Pact player goes *first* in each round. [blue]Each turn is divided into 6 steps:[/blue] • 1st Movement. • 1st Action. • 2nd Action. • 2nd Movement. • Supply. • Draw.8player_name_11941354000
Nekonyancer[blue]*1st Movement*[/blue]---We can move each of our troops. Each *Infantry, Tank,* and *Fleet* unit can move to an adjacent territory. *Airplanes* can move across *two* adjacent territories.9player_name_11941354000
NekonyancerIf you hold down *SHIFT,* BGA will temporarily hide all the troops so you can see the region names more easily. Use this feature to find *BERLIN.* Then continue.10player_name_11941354000
NekonyancerThere are two *dark green* units in Berlin, representing *German* troops. *Select the German infantry unit in Berlin. Move it east, to Warsaw.*11player_name_11941354010
NekonyancerGood! Next, move the map south. There are two ways to do this: 1. *Click/Hold/Drag* with your mouse. 2. Use the mouse *wheel.* You can also use the bar at the top of the map to zoom in and out. Feel free to adjust it however you like. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img67d0735836f741.90667423.jpg[/img]1player_name_1194135467b410383f94100
NekonyancerIf you moved south, you should be able to find *Yugoslavia* easily. There's a *light blue* infantry unit in Yugoslavia, representing a *Pact* unit. *Select it. Move it north, to Hungary.*2player_name_1194135467b410383f94110
NekonyancerNote that we have several Pact units and a German unit in *Romania,* just southeast of *Hungary.* [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img67d07359535085.71539639.jpg[/img] German troops and Pact troops can occupy the same territories, but they can't be commanded together!1player_name_1194135467b4103e42f6c00
NekonyancerNext, scroll up again. Select the airplane unit in Berlin. As you can see from the [green]green arrows,[/green] airplanes can move across *two* adjacent territories. But for now, one is enough. *Move it east, to Warsaw.*2player_name_1194135467b4103e42f6c10
NekonyancerOkay, all our troops are at the front line. I don't want to move any other units. *Click on [red]"Done"[/red] at the top. Then [blue]confirm.[/blue]*1player_name_1194135467b41045222c110QGEFpass 1
Nekonyancer[red]*1st Action*[/red]---Players will usually take actions by playing cards from their hand. Each player started with a hand of *seven cards.* You might need to *scroll down* a little bit to see ours. 1player_name_1194135467b4104eb111200
NekonyancerI toggled *"First Game"* in the lobby options so we would start with a specific set of recommended cards. If you use default options, you'll start with 6 random cards instead. Each card says *GERMANY* or *PACT* at the top, stipulating which faction can be commanded with that particular card. The other player has only one faction to deal with. All of their cards read [red]"SOVIET UNION"[/red] at the top.2player_name_1194135467b4104eb111200
NekonyancerLet's play a card! *1.* Select *Army Group Center.* It's the second card from the left. Be careful not to select multiple cards at the same time. *2.* Click on [blue]*"Play"*[/blue] at the top! *3. [blue]Confirm![/blue]*3player_name_1194135467b4104eb111210
NekonyancerGood! The card says [blue]"Deploy a German infantry in or adjacent to Brest."[/blue] *East Prussia* and *Warsaw* are the only spaces we control that are adjacent to Brest. *Click on Warsaw!*3player_name_1194135467b410b1dddad10
NekonyancerThe next part of the card says we must *move* that unit [green](green arrows)[/green] or *attack* with a force containing it [red](red arrows)[/red]. If we attack, [red]all units of the same faction in that space must attack as well.[/red] If we had a *Pact* unit in Warsaw, it would *not* join in!. [red]Let's attack![/red] *Click on Brest!*2player_name_1194135467b410b88d57d10
NekonyancerGreat! Note that there are [red]two red arrows[/red] on the map now - a solid one from Warsaw and a faded one from East Prussia. The faded arrow represents *support.* Airplanes and fleets are *supporting* units. They can join battles in any adjacent territories, as long as the attacking/defending force is of the *same faction.*1player_name_1194135467b410bca241600
NekonyancerNext, our opponent has to respond to our attack by discarding a card or removing a unit. Each option has a different *combat rank* that will affect how we continue the combat. [blue]From highest combat rank to lowest, their options are:[/blue] • Discard a card with a "Stand Fast" reaction. • Remove an airplane/fleet from the attacked space or a space adjacent to it. • Remove a tank from the attacked space. • Remove an infantry unit from the attacked space. • Discard a card with another reaction.2player_name_1194135467b410bca241600
NekonyancerOur opponent discarded a card with the [red]*"Stand Fast"*[/red] reaction! [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img67d0735d5b1fb7.87720054.jpg[/img] If we like, we can [red]*pass*[/red] to end our attack now. If we want to keep it going (initiate a new combat round), we'll need to choose an option from that same list. We're the attacker though, so it wouldn't make sense for us to *Stand Fast.* The Attacking equivalent is *Sustain Attack.*1player_name_1194135467b412bd756d100
Nekonyancer[blue]Again, the ranked combat options are:[/blue] Stand Fast/Sustain Attack reaction --> airplane --> tank --> infantry --> other reaction. Since our opponent discarded a Stand fast reaction and we must choose an option of the same or higher combat rank, our only way to continue the attack is to discard a card with the *Sustain Attack* reaction. *1.* Select *"Army Group North"* in our hand. *2.* Click on [blue]*"Reaction"*[/blue] at the top. *3. [blue]Confirm.[/blue]*2player_name_1194135467b412bd756d110
NekonyancerOkay, our opponent has to respond again with the same options as before. [green]Let's see what they do...[/green]1player_name_1194135467b412d1d24a700
NekonyancerThey removed an *airplane* from Smolensk, which is adjacent to the attacked area. Let's keep up the attack! Again, we have to discard/remove something of equal or higher combat rank - either another Sustain Attack reaction or an airplane. [blue]Oh wait! In this case, there's another option.[/blue]1player_name_1194135467b412dfe762400
NekonyancerWhen a player removes an airplane, the other player can discard a card with the *Antiair* reaction in response. We have one in our hand! *1.* Select *"Airbase Surprise Attack."* *2.* Click on [blue]*"Reaction."*[/blue] *3. [blue]Confirm![/blue]*2player_name_1194135467b412dfe762410
NekonyancerThey removed a unit from the attacked territory. It's empty now, so combat automatically ended. In this situation, as the attacking player, we can discard a card with the *"Advance"* reaction to move a troop into the territory! *1.* Select the *"Barbarossa"* card. *2.* Select the *bottom-left infantry* unit in Warsaw. *3. [blue]Confirm![/blue]*1player_name_1194135467b412f11b2f010
NekonyancerWe finished our 1st action! [red]*2nd action*[/red]--- Uh... it's just like the first one. You'll usually want to play a card. *Select "OKH" in our hand. [blue]Play[/blue] it!*1player_name_1194135467b413126131a10
NekonyancerOKH let us draw two more cards and then take another action. Let's rub our victory in our opponent's face, shall we? *Play "Army Group South!"*1player_name_1194135467b4131eb917f10
Nekonyancer*Click on Brest to deploy an infantry unit.*1player_name_1194135467b41377774dd10
Nekonyancer*Next, click on Mogilev to move the unit there!*1player_name_1194135467b413795e30910
NekonyancerHah! This war will be over in no time. [red]*2nd movement*[/red]---In this step, we can move each *tank* and *fleet* to an adjacent space. Infantry and airplanes cannot move.1player_name_1194135467b4138626f4100
NekonyancerDid you notice our fleet in the West Baltic Sea? I forgot to mention it earlier. *Select it. Then move it to the Baltic Sea!*2player_name_1194135467b4138626f4110
Nekonyancer[blue]Let's move some tanks next.[/blue] It would probably be best to move the tanks in Warsaw to Brest, but I wanted to engineer a specific situation for you. You'll see it soon. *Select the right tank in Warsaw. Move it north, to East Prussia.*1player_name_1194135467b413a2dd82510
Nekonyancer*Move the other tank in Warsaw to East Prussia.*1player_name_1194135467b413a91684310
NekonyancerI don't want to move anything else. *Click on [red]"Done!"[/red]*1player_name_1194135467b413abb098110QGEFpass 1
Nekonyancer[red]*Supply Step*[/red]---BGA takes care of this step on its own. Any units that are *unsupplied* are removed from the board. A unit is *supplied* if you can trace a line of occupied territories all the way to a *supply flag* of the same faction. *German Flag / Pact Flag:* [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img67d0735e7db9a8.04237215.jpg[/img][img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img67d0735f894a19.80171818.jpg[/img]1player_name_1194135467b413aef348f00
NekonyancerIf one of the territories is unoccupied but still belongs to you, it's okay as long as there aren't any enemy troops in adjacent territories. In this case, our German troops in *Mogilev* and *Brest* are supplied because they can trace lines back to *Berlin* or *Vienna.* However, if the opponent had a fleet in the *West Baltic Sea* and a unit in *Trieste,* the supply lines would be *broken.*2player_name_1194135467b413aef348f00
Nekonyancer*A couple more details:* Airplanes can block supply in adjacent unoccupied land or sea spaces. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img691d4b96408ef6.87293655.jpg[/img] The Soviet infantry in Bessarabia is unsupplied because the Sea of Azov is unoccupied *and* there's a German airplane in Sevastopol, blocking supply in the adjacent unoccupied space. [green][tip] If that wasn't clear, don't worry about it for now. You can check Page 8 of the rulebook for details on supply if something comes up in your first game![/green]3player_name_1194135467b413aef348f00
NekonyancerAlso, if you want the supply lines drawn on the board for you, you can click on any of the *flags* in the player info panels!4QGEF-flsag-sovietUnion67b413aef348f00
Nekonyancer[red]*Draw step*[/red]---This is the last step of the turn. We must draw 3 cards *OR* draw until we have 5 cards in our hand, whichever comes first.5player_name_1194135467b413aef348f00
Nekonyancer[blue]Great! That was one complete turn! Here's a quick recap:[/blue] • Movement (all units) • Action (Play a card) • Action (Play a card) • Movement (tanks and fleets) • Supply (remove unsupplied units) • Draw cards [red]Now our opponent will go![/red]6player_name_1194135467b413af1fb6a00
NekonyancerUh-oh! The Soviets aren't too thrilled about us conquering Brest. They've assembled a large force to take it back! [blue]As the defender, we must remove a piece or discard a card.[/blue]1player_name_1194135467b41457cd77800
NekonyancerWe don't have any *Stand Fast* cards in our hand, but we have an *Exchange* card (Finnish Ski Troops)! The Exchange reaction won't save our infantry unit, but it will force our opponent to remove one of their own at the same time. [blue]Hmm. The card is faded though. Why can't we play it?[/blue]2QGEFcard-7367b41457cd77800
Nekonyancer*Oh!* Because it's a *Pact* card, and there aren't any Pact units in Brest! Since we only have Germans in Brest, we can only use German cards to defend!3QGEFcard-7367b41457cd77800
NekonyancerLooks like we only have two options - remove an airplane from an adjacent territory or remove the infantry from Brest. *Click on the bottom-left airplane in Warsaw. [blue]Confirm![/blue]*4player_name_1194135467b41457cd77810
NekonyancerThey responded by discarding an Antiair reaction. The ball's back in our court. *Remove the bottom-left airplane from Warsaw.*1player_name_1194135467b4146f34c8c10
NekonyancerThey removed an airplane from *Lwow* to continue the attack. We have more airplanes we can use, but I think you get the idea. Let's let them take Brest. *Remove the infantry unit from Brest!*1player_name_1194135467b4148539ae610
NekonyancerThey used an *Advance* reaction card to move a unit into Brest! Our infantry in Mogilev is now completely cut off from *supply!* It will be removed automatically in our next supply step, but that's not all. Supply lines have important ramifications for movement that I omitted earlier.1player_name_1194135467b414c3405fe00
Nekonyancer• Units can't move to spaces from which they would be unsupplied. However, airplanes may fly over such spaces. • Unsupplied units can't attack, but they can move to spaces from which they would be supplied. • Unsupplied airplanes and fleets may defend normally. • Units cannot be deployed in spaces where they would be unsupplied. [green][tip] Again, check page 8 of the rulebook for more info on supply.[/green]2player_name_1194135467b414c3405fe00
NekonyancerOkay, our opponent ended our turn, so we moved on to the next round: *Fall 1941!* Remember, the German/Pact player goes first in each round, so it's our turn now. The first step is movement. I don't want to move anything though, so click on [red]*"Done"*[/red] at the top. [blue]*Confirm!*[/blue]1player_name_1194135467b414ddb0c1b10QGEFpass 1
Nekonyancer[red]First action![/red] *Play "Corpo di Spedizione Italiano in Russia!"*1player_name_1194135467b414fa2077610
NekonyancerThe card says we must move a Pact tank or infantry unit. In situations like this, we are allowed to *move in place* if we like. We won't do that right now though. *Select the tank in Romania. Move it to Hungary!*1player_name_1194135467b4154c01c7710
NekonyancerNext, we can launch an attack with that unit, along with all the other units of the same faction in the same space! *Select the tank in Hungary. [red]Click on Lwow![/red]*1player_name_1194135467b41554663f310
NekonyancerNote that our *Pact* airplane in Romania automatically joined the fight! Our *German* airplane in Warsaw did not!1player_name_1194135467b4155b7903500
NekonyancerOur opponent discarded a card with the *Exchange* reaction! They lost an infantry unit, but we have to remove one of our own as well *Remove the bottom-left infantry in Hungary.*1player_name_1194135467b4156aafddc10
NekonyancerOkay, that removal was for the Exchange reaction. Now we have to decide whether to continue the attack. *Discard the other infantry unit from Hungary to continue the attack!*1player_name_1194135467b415763e84e10
NekonyancerThey removed another infantry. Don't give up! *Remove our airplane from Romania!*1player_name_1194135467b415827535a10
Nekonyancer[blue]We won![/blue] All enemy troops have been removed from Lwow! Uh-oh. There's a problem though. Our only *Advance* card is German, and this was a *Pact* attack. If we don't move in, the supply line will remain broken. [red]Is our unit in Mogilev doomed after all?[/red]1player_name_1194135467b4158d5898200
Nekonyancer[blue]No![/blue] We can move our tank during the second movement step, which comes after the second action! [blue]Here are the steps again:[/blue] Movement (all) Action Action Movement (tanks/fleets) Supply Draw2player_name_1194135467b4158d5898200
NekonyancerOkay, I think you've seen enough of the gameplay at this point, but there's more I need to explain. Remember those cards we set aside at the beginning of the tutorial? *Click on the arrow buttons in the corners to bring them back!* [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img67d073607021c8.40272345.jpg[/img][img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img67d073616fff69.63672781.jpg[/img]3pagemaintitletext67b4158d5898200
NekonyancerThose are *Contingency cards.* Each player has five, and they will be the same in every game. They are always on the table. When we take an action, we can use a Contingency card instead of a card in our hand. Afterward, the card will *flip over* to reveal a different Contingency card.4pagemaintitletext67b4158d5898200
NekonyancerWhen a *flipped* Contingency card is used, it is removed from the game. [green][tip] You can hover over the 🔄 in the bottom-right corner of each card to see what the other side does![/green]5pagemaintitletext67b4158d5898200
NekonyancerIf you don't want to use Contingencies or normal cards, there are a few ways to use actions that I omitted earlier, but they are very inefficient: *• Conscription:* Discard 1 card to deploy 1 infantry or 2 cards to deploy a tank/fleet/airplane. This must be used in or next to a space with a supply flag. *• Forced March:* Discard 1 card to move 1 unit. *• Desperate Attack:* Discard 2 cards to attack a land space. *• Production Initiative:* Draw 1 card. [green]In general, you probably won't want to use these often![/green]6maintitlebar_content67b4158d5898200
NekonyancerThe game will continue as you've seen for a total of *16 rounds.* After each winter and at the end of the game, there's a [green]*scoring round.*[/green] Each player will earn one point for each territory they control that has this icon on it: [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img67d073638822e3.42503178.jpg[/img] If one player gets *10 points* ahead of the other, they immediately win! Otherwise, whoever has the most points at the end of the game wins!7maintitlebar_content67b4158d5898200
